Surgical abortion is typically recommended for women who are further along in their pregnancy, usually after the first trimester. Before the first trimester, the most effective abortion option is the abortion pill. However, beyond the first trimester, surgical abortion methods are necessary.
The two most common surgical procedures are vacuum aspiration (also known as suction abortion) and dilation and evacuation (D&E). Vacuum aspiration is typically performed up to 14 weeks of pregnancy, while D&E is used for pregnancies beyond 14 weeks, up to about 24 weeks. Other surgical options include dilation and curettage (D&C) and induction. Each method is tailored to the stage of pregnancy and individual health needs.
It’s important to note that Orlando—and Florida as a whole—does not currently allow surgical abortions. On May 1, 2024, Florida’s near-total abortion ban went into effect. The new law, which prohibits abortions after 6 weeks of pregnancy, was passed by the Florida Legislature and signed into law by Governor DeSantis last year. This ban replaces the state’s previous 15-week abortion limit.
If considering traveling out of state for a surgical abortion, it’s important to note the side effects. Some of the side effects a woman can experience as the result of a surgical abortion are:
Cramping | Fatigue | Nausea | Vomiting | Bleeding | Infection | Uterine injury | Cervical injury | Perforation of the uterus | Blood clots | Depression | Anxiety | PTSD
